Now I
have your attention, I want to start by informing you about Health & Safety,
stop before you start yawning and thinking here he goes again, that anorak with
his Roy Cropper bag and tape measure, telling us watch that trip, mind that step
and so on.
Well that
is a minute part of Health & Safety, the bit people get tied up with and
stereo typical.
You can
relate most things to health and safety and I will highlight this hopefully in
this article, discipline matters, officers accused of assault in the execution
of their duties it becomes necessary to use force to restrain someone.
why ?
Looking
at the situation overall, did the officer have the appropriate level of
training and equipment, did the officer use the PPE and tools of the job
provided, did they risk assess the situation, was back up requested or needed
was there other options that could have been used.
An
officer is going through the Unsatisfactory Performance Procedure, because they
are off sick with a bad back, is there anything attributable to this injury,
was there something previously reported
as an injury on duty in years gone by.
What
measures were put in place was there been a work place assessment carried out
of the work station and seating, is the vehicle the officer uses appropriate,
such as a 6' ,18 stone officer shoe horning themselves into a Corsa. These are
not excuses for officers to point the finger at the organisation, but to show
that Health & Safety is and can be something that is wide and far reaching.
As Police
officers we deal with issues every day of our lives, risk assessing situations
without even knowing we are doing it.
It is
everyone's responsibility and we need to take owner ship, if something is wrong
get it fixed do not rely on someone else or even worse leave something in a
state of disrepair for a colleague to injure themselves.
A reality
check that should make you sit up and take on board what I am saying, Health
& Safety at work act 1974.
It is in
the title an act, passed by Parliament the Law of the land, fall foul of it and
you could face a fine or imprisonment.
It is
something that can be used to good effect to achieve a common goal, a safe
place to work with the right equipment and protection.
To gather
evidence to support claims such as we do not have enough prisoner carrying
transport, that equipment or PPE is not up to scratch.
It is
down to YOU, the ones who are in these positions, the ones who can do something
about it.
An
unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness or damage - but had the
potential to do so.
Complete
the near miss section on the 700b, this is the evidence that I can take to the
force to show them that things
are not quite right.
To highlight deficiencies in uniform and equipment, to show the force that if they invest in decent public order boots, officers will not go over on their ankle and be off sick for weeks even months with fractures and damaged ligaments.
To invest
in vehicles fit for purpose, to engage with the end user who will know best
what the pit falls are.
For a
comparatively small investment, it can pay dividends long term, reduced
sickness better productivity a happier workforce.
But
without the evidence to support it , it falls at the first hurdle.
This is
not a stick to beat the force with, but a tool to achieve the element of
safety, required to carry out the role of constable, with the aim of working
with the force to reduce sickness stress and discord.
